In this master’s degree program, you learn to take a range of roles as a designer. You will be the facilitator and the project leader of developing strategies, services, systems, and product solutions.

The skills, knowledge, and general competence you develop during this study are valuable in work life, both in the private and the public sector as well as in design research and further studies at the Ph.D. level.

The knowledge, skills, and general competence that you develop through this study program prepare you for working life as a design professional in a wide variety of positions. Many graduates establish their own business, and the study program also acts as a stepping-stone to further studies at the Ph.D. level.

The program focuses on empowering students by combining theoretical and practical knowledge. Through learning activities, students acquire skills to make the choices necessary for the creation of high-quality products. An essential component of the program is sustainable development, and the subject areas covered include design methodology, strategic design, product and material communication, market analysis, and innovation. Practical training is an important part of the study program.

Enrollment Requirements:

To apply for this program you need:

  • A bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent degree, including an in-depth study of subjects, topics, or topic groups equivalent to at least 80 ECTS within the field of design. This may include product design, industrial design, service design, interaction design, furniture, and interior design, design-oriented anthropology, universal design, inclusive design, medical / health design, game design, material culture, and experimentation, or consumption, and consumer behavior.
  • An average grade of at least C (according to the ECTS grading scale) on your bachelor’s degree.
  • A portfolio consisting of documented design works related to products, systems, or services and a letter of motivation. The portfolio must demonstrate skills of visualization and form development in a creative design process, the ability to define and analyze a design problem, general competence in using design methodology and design thinking, and the ability to demonstrate different holistic design solutions to a problem.
  • Proof of your English proficiency (at least a grade of 4 from Norwegian high school, or equivalent).
