University of Tartu

Education in Estonia began around the 13th century. The University of Tartu is the oldest one in the country. It was established in 1632. And gradually, the flow of education started. It is continuing even in the present days as well. A wide range of educational institutions is available now.

Education system

However, currently, the education system is separated into three categories. They are:

  • General education
  • Vocational education
  • Hobby education

Higher education in Estonia

Estonia has achieved a remarkable position in higher education. The higher education system is also separated into three levels. They are:

  • Bachelor’s
  • Masters
  • Doctoral studies.

However, for some disciplines, the bachelor’s and masters are integrated. Such disciplines include medical studies, pharmacy, and similar others.


This is a must for children and there are specialized institutions. They provide pre-schooling to children up to seven years old. In this phase, the children learn the basic elements of education.

Basic education

In this phase, students have to complete nine-year schooling. During this phase, the students get some moderate ideas in different schooling grades. The grades begin from first and end at ninth.

A national curriculum conducts basic schooling. But the curriculum is simple. The level also helps to build the knowledge base of the students.

Secondary education

Next, comes secondary education. This level aims to make the students skilled in particular aspects. The curriculum helps to grow a set of skills among the students.

Higher education in Estonia

In this phase, the students enroll themselves in universities. Either they pursue their bachelor’s or their master’s degrees from the universities. But the selection process of the students is a bit special.


A bachelor’s degree, in Estonia, is of around four years. During this time, they come to know about the context of their program. Also, they get in-depth knowledge about their course.

Interestingly, the students can have the option of selecting theory and practical curricula. It helps them to get the right ideas about their studies. With the theory-based approach, they learn the theories.

And with the practical approach, they know the practices of the theories learned.


After completing the graduate, the students pave towards the master’s degree. This is an advanced degree than the bachelor’s.

Usually, the master’s degree is completed within two years. But the students need to have some work experience to obtain the masters.

Doctoral Studies

A doctoral study is a higher level of education in Estonia. And this is prestigious as well. In this phase, the students get the necessary skills for research. They also get some real-life experience in developing their careers.

Usually, students need to study for around four years for their doctoral degrees.

International students

Interestingly, Estonia has a good number of international students. They arrive in the country to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees, which is known as an integrated study program.

The duration of such programs is around six years. And the programs cover areas like pharmacy, civil engineering, among others.

Academic calendar

In Estonia, the academic year begins in September. And it continues for June in the next year. The terms are separated into two semesters – Autumn and Spring. The length of each of the terms is around five months.

Usually, the Autumn term starts in September and the exams of the term are held in January. And Spring beings in late January and ends in around May. The exams are held in June.
