About the Degree
The overall aim of this Master’s program is to support participants in achieving competences that will allow them to act as change agents in the introduction of problem-based and project organized learning at the level of a single course as well as at the level of a curriculum or an institution within the context of engineering and science education, addressing diverse groups of students.

The MPBL program is an online 2-year part-time problem-based learning program, exemplary for its own contents and delivered as on-line distance education. A semester in the MPBL program includes a problem-based project and two courses, the main study activity being the project.
The Master’s program consists of four semesters:
1. Semester: Development of teaching competences
The semester aims to present the theoretical foundations of student-centered teaching and active and collaborative learning, including PBL. The semester includes:
- Project: Teaching portfolio
- Course 1: Teaching and learning theories
- Course 2: Collaborative learning skills and scientific writing
2. Semester: PBL model and principles
The semester aims to present PBL principles and models together with methods of curriculum development and methods of facilitating students’ active learning. The semester includes:
- Project: Design and planning of a PBL semester
- Course 1: PBL models and curriculum development
- Course 2: Facilitation skills and teaching methods for active learning
3. Semester: Management of change and educational evaluation
The semester aims to present theories of change management in the context of PBL and methods of evaluation of educational change. The semester includes:
- Project: Implementation of change
- Course 1: Management of change to PBL
- Course 2: Research methods for educational evaluation
Admission to the MPBL program presupposes a relevant higher education, at least at Bachelor level, and at least two years of relevant, professional experience in teaching or similar occupation following completion of the qualifying exam.Relevant bachelor educations are for example:
- Bachelor of Engineering within any field of engineering
- Bachelor of Science within any field of science
- Bachelor of Education.
