The MSc in Mathematics-Economics is taught at the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Economics and Business. Students specialize through course activities and projects and through a thesis. Students structure their own individual study program in consultation with a lecturer. The program is designed on the basis of each individual student’s academic qualifications, interests, and subjects studied at the BSc level. Read more about the different tracks over the page.

As a student on the program, you are based in the Department of Mathematics and at the Department of Economics and Business Economics. You, therefore, get to benefit from the facilities of both departments.

The Department of Mathematics has its own canteen, computer rooms, library, and study areas shared by students. As a master’s student, you will be given your own desk in an office shared with other master’s students. The department also has a number of student organizations such as Euler’s Friends, the Kalkulerbar or Friday bar, and the mathematics– economists association (the MØF) through which academic activities, study trips, and social functions are organized.

The Department of Economics and Business Economics has nearly six hundred study spaces, a large canteen, and state-of-the-art high-tech facilities to meet students’ needs.

Career Opportunities  

Job prospects for Mathematics-Economics graduates are extremely positive, and career opportunities are many. A large proportion of our graduates find work in the private sector. Banks and insurance companies are the major workplaces, with many graduates working as problem-solvers in consultancy and telecommunications companies. Planning departments in large industrial or manufacturing companies are also a relevant job market.

Have you thought about how rates for a new mortgage loan should be fixed – with an interest-rate ceiling or as interest-only loans? In fact, it was mathematics–economics graduates who developed the model used for fixing the cost of such loans. All major companies face complex problems, and many turn to mathematics–economist to solve them.

Mathematics–economists are experts in designing optimization strategies, something that requires great theoretical insight into both economics and mathematics. As a student of mathematics–economics, you have the option of specializing in a subject within a broad area, including one of the areas in which Aarhus University is particularly strong: mathematical finance, economics, and operations research.

Language Requirements:

All applicants without a legal right of admission to English language Master’s degree programs must provide documentation of English language qualifications identical or comparable with an ‘English B level’ with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the Danish upper secondary school (‘gymnasium’).

Please note that Danish language Master’s programs may also have an English B requirement.

English B language qualifications can be documented as follows:

  • English B level (Danish upper secondary school level) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 without rounding up.
  • TOEFL
    English B – Test result of at least 83 (internet-based test).
    Aarhus University accepts the TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition test.
    Aarhus University does not accept the TOEFL ITP or paper-based tests (this includes the TOEFL ITP Plus for China Solution).
    When you sign up for a TOEFL test, you must request the test center to add Aarhus University as a recipient of your test result in order for us to verify your test result.
    The Aarhus University TOEFL code is 8935.
  • IELTS
    English B– IELTS Academic test result of at least 6.5 points.
  • Cambridge English Qualifications
    English B –  Cambridge English Advanced (grades A, B, and C) or Cambridge English First (grade A) or 180 points as a minimum on the Cambridge English Scale.
    Once you have received your test results, you must upload them to your application. In addition, please share your test scores with Aarhus University through the Candidate Results Website (https://candidates.cambridgeenglish.org/), so we can verify your test score online.
    You must share your results with Aarhus University via the Candidate Results Website (candidates.cambridgeenglish.org). To access this website you must register using your ‘Candidate ID’ and ‘Secret Number’ (obtained from your exam center). We do not accept test results that cannot be verified through the Cambridge website.
  • A Nordic/Duborg/International Baccalaureate (from the IB diploma program)/European Baccalaureate (from the “ScholaEuropaea”) entrance examination with an English level in Denmark with a GPA equivalent of 3.0 on the Danish 7 scale as a minimum.

  • A completed high-school diploma/Upper Secondary School Leaving Examination, English language Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Scotland or Ireland. The applicant must provide documentation that the program was taught in English.
    Please note that applicants with an English language qualifying examination or degree program from all other countries than the above mentioned must submit a test.
  • Applicants holding a Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife (Abiturzeugnis) from Germany with the subject English Leistungsfach/eA level. The subject must be passed with a single subject GPA equivalent of 2.0 on the Danish 7-point scale.

In addition, the following applies:

  • The test result must not be more than two years old at the time of application.
  • Both IELTS and TOEFL are offered in Denmark. TOEFL is specifically offered in Aarhus.
  • Current exchange students should be aware that they must also document their English language qualifications when applying for a full degree program.

About the University/Institution:

In 2011, Aarhus University launched the extended summer program “AU Summer University”. The program consists of a portfolio of courses taught in English at Bachelor’s or Master’s level within the fields of Arts, Business and Economics, Business Communication, Political Science and Law, Health, Science, and Technology.

In 2020, we are offering 101 English taught courses by AU lecturers and invited international guest lecturers from all over the world. All teaching at AU Summer University is based on current research and has a strong international perspective. The close link between research and education ensures the quality and depth of the courses.
