MSc in Advanced Mathematics at Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany

Chemnitz University of Technology 4 Semesters
Germany Full Time
Master of Science in Mathematics Onsite

The aim of the four-semester Master’s programme “Advanced and Computational Mathematics” is to train highly qualified graduates in mathematics who are capable of successfully dealing with challenges encountered in academic and practical working fields. Based on a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, the programme deepens knowledge and skills in pure and applied mathematics. The following three main fields of specialisation are offered:

  • Advanced Theoretical Mathematics
  • Computational Mathematics
  • Data Sciences

The programme also covers basic education in a non-mathematical minor chosen by the student from subjects such as Computer Science or Economics and Business Administration. Upon completion of the Master’s degree, particularly qualified students can enter directly into the PhD programme.

The PhD study programme deepens knowledge and skills, especially for independent scientific work. In addition to immersion in the field of specialisation, students have the option to attend lectures and seminars on the latest research and to discuss current problems in research.

Course Details:

Throughout the Master’s phase of the program, current topics in pure mathematics and applied mathematics are taught by internationally renowned scientists in comprehensive lecture series. All lecture topics are discussed in depth in tutorials.

In the first two semesters, a solid foundation of the chosen specialization is acquired by attending some of the following lectures and seminars:

  1. Advanced Theoretical Mathematics: Distributions and Differential Operators, Hilbert Space Methods, Algebraic and Differential Geometry, Topology and Complex Geometry, Modern Approximation Theory, Nonlinear PDEs, Stochastic Analysis, Stochastic Processes, Discrete Optimisation, Computer Algebra
  2. Computational Mathematics: Nonlinear Optimisation, Algorithms for Convex Optimisation, Numerical Methods of ODEs/PDEs, Numerical Linear Algebra, Modern Approximation Theory, Stochastic Analysis, Stochastic Processes, Discrete Optimisation, Computer Algebra
  3. Data Science: Introduction to Data Science, Big Data Analytics, Statistics in Data Science, Matrix Methods in Data Science, Algebraic and Geometric Methods in Data Science

In the last two semesters, the knowledge in the chosen specialization is further developed by attending lectures such as the following: Optimisation under Uncertainty, Singularity Theory, Methods of Algebraic Statistics, Fast Solvers for PDEs, etc.
Continuous feedback regarding academic performance is given to the students in the tutorials to the lectures and in three seminars, which have to be completed successfully. Two of these seminars have to be chosen from the field of specialization. In the fourth semester of the Master’s phase, students write the Master’s thesis on a subject from their field of specialization. The degree Master of Science (MSc) is awarded upon successful completion of the Master’s thesis and four oral exams, one in pure mathematics, one in applied mathematics, one in the field of specialization, and one in the minor. These oral exams can be taken at any time during the four semesters of the Master’s phase, according to the study regulations.
Students with good to excellent results in the Master’s degree program qualify for the Ph.D. phase of the program. This phase emphasizes independent research carried out by the students. Doctoral students select a supervisor among the professors of the faculty. Doctoral research is complemented by research lectures, colloquia, and research seminars.

About the University/Institution:

Chemnitz University of Technology (CUT) offers an outstanding education to its students, providing them with various and attractive career perspectives. Owing to an excellent professor-to-student ratio, CUT ranks among the top five universities in Germany with respect to the quality of teaching. This high staff-to-student ratio allows more individual attention to be given to students, better enabling them to meet specific academic needs and to enjoy shorter course completion times than in most other German universities. Millions of euros have been invested in CUT in recent years, both by the government and through research projects funded by industry, making it one of the most modern research-based universities in Germany. The computing resources are among the best in Germany, and the research equipment is continually being updated and expanded. In addition to this, the university has been recognized as having one of the best-designed campuses. By embracing the spirit of globalization enthusiastically, CUT has shown that it truly lives up to the tradition of innovation in the city of Chemnitz and in its educational institutions.
