International agricultural program with a focus on development cooperation

Continual population growth has caused an increase in the demand for sufficient and healthy food. AgriTropics, therefore, follows an interdisciplinary approach to increase agricultural production in the tropics and subtropics in a sustainable way without losing sight of the scarcity of existing resources. Students are prepared in a targeted manner for research focused on the development and are qualified to lead interdisciplinary teams.

The curriculum is designed to convey the following abilities and competences:

Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of natural resources and their influence on agricultural products in the tropics and subtropics.
Consideration of agricultural production systems and methods in view of the nutrient cycle
Knowledge transfer to derive management recommendations and evaluate various sustainability strategies
Evaluation of infrastructure-related limitations to market access
Development of specific development approaches for the sustainable increase of agricultural production

Course Details:

In the first year of studies, the students complete six compulsory modules. These are made up of various fields with a focus on tropic and sub-tropic areas. The topics handled include plant and animal production, ecology and resource management, and methods on interdisciplinary cooperation.

Besides the compulsory modules, students have the opportunity to choose three elective modules from more than 15 modules related to the tropics and sub-tropics.

Enrollment Requirements:

Students require an above-average Bachelor of Science or an equivalent degree in Agricultural or Natural Sciences or a related discipline based on at least three years of university studies or German FH studies.

Over and above these general entry requirements, the selection is based on grades, educational background, motivation, and relevant professional experience.
