Korea-United States Journalists Exchange is accepting Applications

The East-West Center announces the 2020 Korea-United States Journalists Exchange scheduled for May 24 – June 3, 2020. This 14th Exchange will focus on relations between North and South Korea, the US and ROK, and South Korea and its neighbors. The program aims to give both Korean and US journalists a clear understanding of how the Trump and Moon administrations are managing their alliance relationship despite the tensions regarding Washington’s request that South Korea increases its financial support for US troops stationed there. Additionally, due to the lack of progress in US-North Korea negotiations, the North-South Korea dialogue has been set back; North Korea refuses to progress further with the South until there is more headway in US-NK talks.

The 2020 program will take six Korean journalists to visit Washington, DC and Honolulu, Hawaii; and six US journalists to visit Seoul, Jeju and the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. Korean journalists will explore conflicts between North Korea and the United States including the threat of nuclear weapons and the intercontinental ballistic missiles; US-ROK relations; regional neighbors; and other current issues. US journalists will focus on President Moon’s actions and policies on intra-Korean relations; US-ROK relations; and South Korea’s cutting-edge information technology and overall high-tech economy. They will also attend a day of sessions at the Jeju Forum on “Reinventing Multilateral Cooperation in Asia.” The Exchange will end with a two-day dialogue at the East-West Center in Honolulu, where the Koreans and Americans will share their travel experiences and new perspectives; and exchange opinions on how media coverage of US-Korea issues can be improved.
