What IELTS is?

The International English Language Testing System, better known as ILETS, is a language test. It identifies if the participant is proficient in the English language.

The test is mostly taken for migration or for higher studies in countries where English is widely spoken. Without the IELTS test, this is not possible to enroll in universities or any educational institutions.

Brief overview of IELTS modules

During the IELTS exam, an applicant has to appear in four types of language skill tests. The skills are:

• Listening
• Reading
• Writing
• Speaking

Listening

Listening is a separate module of the IELTS test. In this phase, the applicant has to listen to some native English pronunciations. There might be any given situation or any particular context. At the end of the listening, the applicant has to pass the answers through an answer script.

The gross duration of the test is 40 minutes. The applicants have to pay attention for 30 minutes and have to use the next 10 minutes to answer what they have listened to.

Reading

In this phase, the applicants have to read something. In this process, they will read two or three texts of different sizes and lengths. Based on their reading, they have to answer certain questions.

One thing that needs attention here is that while writing the answers, the applicants cannot make spelling or grammar errors. It will reduce their overall grade. So, they have to pay attention to the grammar and certain spellings that they find in the texts.

Matching information, heading, selection of the right titles etc. are the key challenges here.

Writing

This is the other interesting section of the IELTS testing. The applicants have to write in two stages. In the first phase, they have to write around 150 words. And they will have 20 minutes for this task.

In the second part, they have to write around 250 words and they will get 40 minutes altogether.

The applicants have to explain graphs, tables, diagrams, and charts, or discuss any views, support their statements with valid arguments etc.

Speaking

Speaking is the last phase of the IELTS test. This is a face-to-face program. The applicant has to face an interviewer during the spoken test. The live interviewer will ask about the basic information of the applicant in the first stage.

During the second step of the spoken test, the applicant has to answer certain cue cards. In the last phase, the interviewer will discuss the general issues in particular.

The responses from the applicant will help to gauge the capacity of the language. And based on the conversation, fluency, word selection, and others, marking will be done.

IELTS Scoring system

The applicant will receive scores based on each of the modules. Interestingly, there is no pass or fail in the IELTS test. Rather, it will determine how good or poor your English language skills are.
