Admission process

• Admission to our English study programs is once per year. The application system opens up early November.
• The deadline for non-EU citizenship is February 1st. Applicants to the February 1st deadline must pay an application fee of 500 NOK. You will get an answer to your application after March 15th.
• The deadline for non-EU citizen applicants who hold a Bachelor’s diploma from a Norwegian higher education institution or are expected to receive such a diploma at the end of the Spring semester 2020 is extended to June 1st. Non-EU applicants for the June 1st deadline must pay an application fee of 500 NOK.
• ​The deadline for EU/EEA/Swiss/Nordic/Norwegian/English speaking Visa exempted countries (UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia) citizenship is June 1st.
• No applications will be processed before the deadline.

Study start 

• The English study programmes begin early in August.
• Attendance for orientation week is mandatory for all new international students.

Tuition fees

• MF does not take tuition fees.
• MF does not offer any scholarships or any other financial support.
• Non-EU applicants must document sufficient funding for living in Norway in order to get a study permit/visa.

Bachelor in Theology, Religion, and Society 
General admission requirements are described on the GSU-list. Applicants have to meet the general admission requirements (except proficiency in Norwegian) in order to be eligible for admission.​
Applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements will be ranked according to their level of written English proficiency. Your chances to be admitted will depend on your level of English proficiency. All applicants must document their proficiency in English. Please see the English proficiency. 

Master in History of Religions
A bachelor’s degree or a period of the study compared with a Norwegian Bachelor’s degree from a recognized Higher Education institution: The degree must be in disciplines related to the master’s program (history, religious studies, theology, archaeology, art history, etc) with an average grade equivalent to Norwegian C level (British Second class, upper-division). General admission requirements (except proficiency in Norwegian).
Applicants who complete a bachelor’s degree before July 1st can apply, but the application will not be considered before the completed degree is documented with diploma and transcript of records.
All applicants must document their proficiency in English. Please see the English proficiency. 

Master in Religion in Contemporary Society (based on a revision of Master in Religion, Society, and Global Issues)
A Bachelor’s degree or a period of the study compared with a Norwegian Bachelor’s degree from a recognized Higher Education institution. The degree must have a combination of relevant social sciences and religious studies: A minimum of 80 ECTS credits including specialization in one subject area, and a minimum of 20 ECTS credits in the other subject area and an average grade equivalent to Norwegian C level (British Second class, upper-division). Applicants who complete a bachelor’s degree before July 1st can apply, but the application will not be considered before the completed degree is documented with diploma and transcript of records.

Master in Theology
A Bachelor’s degree (or a period of the study compared with a Norwegian Bachelor’s degree from a recognized Higher Education institution) in Theology or Religious Studies, with an average grade equivalent to Norwegian C level (British Second class, upper-division). A minimum of 80 ECTS must be in Christian theology. General admission requirements (except proficiency in Norwegian). Applicants who complete a bachelor’s degree before July 1st can apply, but the application will not be considered before the completed degree is documented with a diploma and transcript of records.

Bachelor’s

Proficiency in English must be documented through one of the following:

1) TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language. Minimum total score 80. Minimum writing score: 17. In order for your test result to be included in your application, your official TOEFL score report must be sent directly from ETS to the admissions office at MF. MF’s TOEFL code (DI code) is 7308
2) IELTS – International English Language Testing System (academic) test. Minimum overall band score: 6.0, minimum writing score 5.0. Documentation of this test type must be uploaded to the application web
3) PTE Academic. Pearson Test of English Academic. Minimum overall score: 51. Minimum writing score:51. Documentation of this test type must be uploaded to the application web
4) English from Norwegian upper secondary school with minimum grade 4

Are you exempt from submitting an English language test? 

The following applicants are exempt from submitting an English language test.

• Applicants who have passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) with a minimum grade of 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or passed “programfag” in English (140 hours) from Norwegian upper secondary school.
• Native speakers with completed upper secondary education from the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, Singapore or Trinidad and Tobago.
• Applicants who have completed a minimum of one year’s university studies in academic subjects with English as the language of instruction in the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia. Please note that branch campus and distance learning students are not exempt.
• Applicants who have completed a minimum of one year of master’s degree studies with English as the language of instruction in one of the Nordic countries or the Netherlands, or completed a bachelor’s degree with English as the language of instruction in one of the Nordic countries or the Netherlands.
• Applicants who have completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme with English at Higher Level (HL) with the minimum score of 4.
• Applicants who have completed both upper secondary school and a bachelor’s degree taught in English from Fiji, Mauritius, Samoa or South Africa.
• Applicants with completed upper secondary school from Hong Kong with an AS-level examination in Use of English with grades A-C or HKDSE English Language Subject Level grade 5.

MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion, and Society is a Specialized University.

MF was founded in 1907 as an independent theological institution at the university level and is Norway’s largest provider of theological education and research.  MF has around 110 employees, 1300 bachelor and master students, and about 60 ph.d. students.

Since 1967, MF has offered academic studies in Christianity and religion for use in school and society. As needs have arisen, MF has developed a broad portfolio of professional degrees for church and school. The religious demography of Norway has changed significantly. There is an increasing need and demand for knowledge and quality in research on, education and communication about religion and society. MF meets this challenge through interdisciplinary research on religion and society, along with relevant bachelor, master, and ph.d. degrees in theology, religion, and society.

MF has two centers:

MF KOM – Center for Excellence in Research, Development, and Communication for Church and Congregation. This center is an intermediary between scholars at MF and church workers who wish to utilize MF’s competency in their own contexts.

MF Center for the Advanced Study of Religion (MF CASR) organizes the research on religion done at MF. It facilitates joint projects between MF and other institutions. MF CASR encompasses areas of research including the study of religion, history of religion, philosophy of religion, texts and manuscript research, cultural and art history, along with sociology of religion.

Norwegian Philological Institute (PHI) is affiliated with and located at MF. The cooperation involves offering courses in classical languages connected with major world religions and cultures.
