While studying Global Environmental and Sustainability Studies in an international setting, you will acquire the knowledge to scientifically explain and assess global climate and environmental problems. Moreover, you will learn to understand the social values, guidelines, and behavioral patterns that generate these problems, gain the power of judgment and develop new approaches for gentler processing of natural resources.

As a student of the Global Environmental and Sustainability Studies, you will explore the current sustainability challenges from the point of view of different disciplines to achieve a holistic understanding of the problems at hand.

In this program, you acquire a general knowledge basis of the subject and methodological approaches of the natural and social sciences; such as mathematics, statistics, ecology, environmental chemistry, methods of sustainability communication as well as sustainability management and sustainability governance.

Possibility of finding part-time employment

International students with residence permits are allowed to undertake a limited amount of paid employment (max. 120 days per year, alternatively 240 days part-time – up to four hours a day).

Course Details:

The Bachelor’s degree program at Leuphana College consists of four basic elements: the Global Environmental and Sustainability Studies major (90 ECTS credits), the minor (30 ECTS credits), the Leuphana Semester (30 ECTS credits), and the Complementary Studies (30 ECTS credits).

The Bachelor’s degree program in Global Environmental and Sustainability Studies begins with the Leuphana Semester, during which you learn the methodological and disciplinary foundations of your academic specialization in environmental and sustainability studies.

From the second semester, your Bachelor’s program will be divided into the Global Environmental and Sustainability Studies major, the minor of your choice (e.g., spatial sciences, economics, or philosophy), and Complementary Studies. In Complementary Studies, you can try out new ways of working and thinking from other disciplines, allowing you to expand your interdisciplinary skills.

Enrollment Requirements:

Admission requirements include the following:

  • University entrance qualification
  • Sufficient knowledge of the English language

Teaching Language:

The courses in the Global Environmental and Sustainability Studies major are held exclusively in English. The Leuphana Semester and the Complementary Studies can also be studied completely in English. However, the range of minor subjects in English is limited.

Language Requirements:

Applicants whose first language is not English must prove sufficient knowledge of the English language.

Applicants can prove their language abilities in one of the following various ways:

  • bypassing the TOEFL (computer-based test) with a minimum score of 97 points or
  • bypassing the TOEIC (four skills test) with a minimum score of 850 points (listening and reading) and 340 points (speaking & writing) or
  • bypassing the IELTS (academic test version) with a minimum score of 6.5 points or
  • bypassing the Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) exam with a grade B
  • bypassing the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) exam with a grade A
  • a certificate from an English-speaking school that entitles the holder to study in the respective country
