Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) is a specific approach to Bachelor’s level education. It reaches across academic fields while also offering discipline-oriented academic training in one particular Major. LAS education is a process of intellectual discovery and personal development in an interdisciplinary and international learning community. The LAS program encourages students to critically reflect on science and knowledge and to become skilled communicators and creative shapers of their environment.
Program features
- The language of instruction is English. Students who do not yet speak German must learn German up to the A2 level (CEFR).
- LAS is a four-year program with 240 ECTS credits. It has a progressive storyline covering academic competencies, skills training, academic specialization and room for intellectual exploration.
- LAS is a selective program with an annual intake of 80 students.
Contents
The LAS program has three parts: Core (66 ECTS credits), Major (102 ECTS credits), and Electives (72 ECTS credits).
1. The Core is shared by all LAS students. It includes academic skills and reflections on knowledge and science as well as a curriculum on responsibility and leadership.
2. The Majors provide an in-depth education in a specific academic field that is, in itself, interdisciplinary. After their first year, students choose one of the following Majors:
3. In the Electives, LAS students shape their own study profiles. They can take courses at other university departments and/or at the European Campus, take language classes, study abroad for a semester or two, or undertake internships or independent projects.

Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at University College Freiburg is not just a program name but an approach to education. LAS education is an exciting process of intellectual discovery and personal development within an interdisciplinary and international learning community. With its LAS program, UCF provides a structured opportunity for students to learn about the human and the non-human world, to systematically develop their capacity for high-level academic work in exchange with others and to gradually unfold their own unique interests and abilities in ways suited to their aspirations.
During the first year – the so-called “Foundational Year” – of the LAS program, students follow the same curriculum and establish a shared basis of knowledge and skills. From year two onwards, students have a significant amount of freedom in designing their own study program. Depending on their choices with regard to the Major, Electives and study abroad opportunities, individual study trajectories develop quite differently.
After their first year and after having completed three Major introductions, each student chooses his or her own Major. Parallel to classes in the Major, all students take further Core courses, notably on leadership and responsibility. They have substantial freedom to take courses of their choice in the program’s Electives section.
LAS students are encouraged to spend part of their studies in a foreign country. About 80% of all LAS students seize the chance to gain experiences abroad – usually during their third year of study. In the last semester of year four, each student writes a Bachelor’s thesis in the area of his or her Major.
The LAS program has an annual intake of 80 students, and the program is selective. The grade- and interview-based selection focuses on academic achievements, personal motivation, and the match between the LAS program and interested students. Our target group is students with intellectual curiosity and responsibility who are looking for breadth and depth in their academic training. The application requirements are:
- officially certified copy of your University entrance qualification
- proof of English proficiency (see below)
- letter of motivation (in English, maximum 1,000 words)
- study-orientation test, e.g., the LAS Online Study Choice Assistant (OSA)
