The BA degree in Humanities, the Arts, and Social Thought gives students the opportunity to gain thorough training in fields such as art history, philosophy, literature, and film, while also acquiring knowledge of the key intellectual developments, works, and questions that lie at the origin of the social and natural sciences and the practising arts.

What is the good life and how are we to build a good society? What are the aims of scientific research? What is the function and future of art?

Students specialize in one of the following areas of concentration: Art and Aesthetics, Ethics and Politics, or Literature and Rhetoric.

Course Details:

Students take at least four courses per semester during their first three years of studies, and three courses per semester during the final year. A flexible degree plan in the third and fourth year allows students to study abroad for up to two semesters. During the fourth year, students write a BA thesis under the supervision of a faculty adviser.

Students shape a specialized academic profile through their chosen area of concentration, guided by faculty members who help them to develop a program of study tailored to their interests and future plans. Within the elective component of the degree, students may choose from a wide variety of courses in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

They may also pursue an internship for academic credit or focus on foreign language study. All BA candidates must demonstrate intermediate proficiency in German by the end of their second year.

Enrollment Requirements:

Students must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) by the time they enrol.
Students can apply through the Common Application or the college’s own online application form.

Required materials include the following: a motivation statement, a writing sample, a letter of recommendation from a teacher, official transcripts, and proof of advanced English proficiency for non-native English speakers (see below).

Applicants must provide proof of English proficiency at level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. We accept the following tests:

  1. TOEFL iBT (minimum score: 95)
  2. IELTS Academic (minimum score: 7.0)
  3. Cambridge (CAE: A-C, CPE: A-C)

Bard College Berlin is Germany’s first private liberal arts university. On a residential campus in the former embassy quarter of East Berlin, it offers Bachelor and one-year undergraduate programs in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
