The Animation & Game Bachelor’s program at the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Germany, is a multidisciplinary course with a strong practical focus. Mainly taught in English, it qualifies students for careers in the international media and entertainment industries. The unique combination of two disciplines, animation and game design, reflects the merging platforms and distribution channels and enables the graduates to successfully evolve in a highly dynamic professional field.

The course is essentially project-based. During seven semesters, the students will work on a wide range of subjects such as classical and CG animation, art direction, technical art, game design, game development, media theory, and producing/project management. The faculty’s facilities include film & sound studios, a motion capturing studio, a game lab with virtual reality equipment, animation labs with industry-standard software & hardware, and a usability lab.

Course Details:

The modules of this Bachelor’s program combine artistic, methodological, and technical subjects with topics related to the professional development and production of animations and games. Students gain a wide range of core competencies and are encouraged at the same time to specialize in individual areas of interest. The main fields of specialization are:

  1. Concept development, design, and art for animations and games
  2. Technical art for animations & games
  3. Game development
  4. Producing and project management

The Bachelor of Arts program is project-based. It focuses strongly on teamwork and problem-oriented learning processes. From the second semester onwards, students will carry out semester projects in groups of three to four, which are coached by an interdisciplinary team of lecturers. The program includes one full-semester industrial placement (fourth semester) to foster professionalism. Lectures, seminars, and workshops are carried out in English.

Enrollment Requirements:

The application procedure for the BA Animation & Game at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt consists of a formal application and an artistic entrance examination. The formal application must be submitted through uni-assist.

Applicants will need a valid university entrance certificate. Applicants who do not have a university entrance certificate and do not expect to obtain one in the year of their application may still apply for admission based on outstanding artistic aptitude.

Language Requirements:

As the Animation & Game programme is mainly carried out in English, English language proficiency is mandatory and must be proven through a B2 certificate according to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

About the University/Institution:

The roots  of University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt goes back to 1876] along with Technische Universität Darmstadt (the first electrical engineering chair and inventions fame), when both these Universities were an integrated entities, a need for a separate industry-based research educational institution was felt in the early 1930s, finally University of Applied sciences emerged as a separate industry-based research educational institution in 1971 and is the largest University of Applied Sciences in Hesse (German: Hessen) with about 11,000 students.

In 1971 when Hochschule Darmstadt was established, other regions of the Hesse also felt the need for such industry-based educational institutions. In later years a heavy number of Hochschule were established all across Germany. As a result of this, today the German industry’s engineering workforce is propelled by students of the Hochschule.
